PNN News Desk | Khulna:
Seven months after the student clashes and teacher harassment incidents at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) in February last year, five students have been expelled, and 32 others have been formally warned. This decision was taken during a meeting of the university’s Student Discipline Committee on Sunday, and letters were officially delivered to the affected students on Monday.
Professor B.M. Ikramul Haque, Secretary of the KUET Student Discipline Committee, told Samakal:
“A total of five students have been punished. One student has been expelled for one year, while four others have been expelled for six months. The remaining 32 students have been warned. Their respective departments and the students themselves have been informed.”
Among the punished students:
Salim Sadman (MSc) – expelled for one year.
Omar Bin Hossain (Leather Engineering, Batch 23) – expelled for six months.
Shanto Islam (Textile Engineering, Batch 21) – expelled for six months.
Md. Hridoy (Textile Engineering) – expelled for six months.
Safwan Ahmed Ifaz (Electronics & Communication Engineering, Batch 22) – expelled for six months.
On 18 February, disputes arose at KUET over demands to end student politics, leading to clashes between ordinary students and student organization activists along with outsiders. Over a hundred students were injured, and on the same night, several teachers, including the then Vice-Chancellor, were assaulted by students accusing them of siding with the attackers.
A committee led by Professor Dr. M.A.A. Hashem, Head of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, was formed to investigate the incident. The committee submitted its report on 14 April. Subsequently, amid ongoing student protests, the Ministry of Education relieved the then Vice-Chancellor of duty.
Due to these events, academic activities at KUET were suspended for about five and a half months. Classes resumed on 29 July after the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor.
