The International Crisis Group (ICG) has said that the new government must immediately take effective reform initiatives in the economy, governance, and security sectors. It also advised maintaining political dialogue with opposition parties and avoiding conflict.

In a recently published report titled “Bangladesh’s new government gets to work”, the ICG stated that although the transition of power after a long period of authoritarian rule is an important step, it remains uncertain whether the new government can transform public support into long-term stability and legitimacy.

The report said the new government must simultaneously face major challenges including economic recovery, law and order improvement, political reform implementation, and managing the role of opposition forces. It also warned that global energy dependency could put additional pressure on the economy.

According to ICG, political reform could become a major source of dispute. Although the ruling party has expressed support for some reform proposals, its position on constitutional amendments and structural changes is still unclear, which may increase dissatisfaction among opposition parties and lead to instability.

The report also mentioned uncertainty regarding the future of the Awami League, saying that keeping the party out of politics for a long time could increase instability instead. It stressed reviewing cases filed against Awami League leaders and ensuring proper legal procedures.

ICG emphasized that the judiciary should not be used for political purposes and recommended transparency. It suggested withdrawing cases lacking sufficient evidence and granting bail to individuals who do not pose a threat to public security.

It also stressed police reform, reducing political interference, increasing professionalism, and restoring public trust.

Additionally, it highlighted the importance of protecting minority rights, increasing women’s representation, and ensuring youth employment for long-term stability.

ICG warned that failure to ensure economic development and good governance could lead to renewed political instability in the country, urging immediate and visible action from the government.
