Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the US Senate election in Michigan. With his victory in the Michigan race, El-Sayed is set to become the first Muslim senator in the history of the United States.

The 42-year-old El-Sayed, the son of an Egyptian immigrant family, previously served as director of the Wayne County Department of Health. During this election campaign, he focused on progressive commitments, including universal healthcare, reducing the influence of corporate money in politics and ending US funding for wars abroad. He also criticised Washington's support for Israel.

In his victory speech on Wednesday, El-Sayed said parents who had struggled to explain to their children why the president publicly mocked someone's name or the way they prayed could now tell their children that those who committed injustice had lost.

He also reiterated his promises to reduce the cost of living, remove the influence of big money from politics and introduce a "Medicare for All" healthcare system. According to El-Sayed, taxpayers' money should be spent on improving the lives of people in the United States and their children rather than being used to bomb people in other countries.

Throughout the campaign, El-Sayed also criticised the remarks made by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. He alleged that both had directed Islamophobic and racist comments at him during the election campaign.

In his victory speech, addressing Trump, El-Sayed said that after Vance administers his oath of office in January, the president can simply call him "Senator" if he wishes.

No Republican candidate has won a Senate election in Michigan since 1994. However, the announcement by Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who had served two terms, that he would not seek re-election turned the seat into a fiercely contested race.

As part of the nationwide battle over control of the Senate, the Michigan election attracted substantial campaign spending. More than $100 million was spent on advertisements after the August 4 primary election.

Haley Stevens, El-Sayed's rival in the Democratic primary, endorsed Republican candidate Rogers towards the end of the campaign. She also criticised El-Sayed's campaign, describing it as politics of "hate".

However, El-Sayed's victory is not expected to significantly alter the balance of party control in the Senate. Both of Michigan's Senate seats were previously held by Democrats.

Nevertheless, his political views are considered more left-leaning than those of the Democratic Party's traditional mainstream. His opposition to the influence of corporations and billionaires, along with his positions on Israel, socialism and the role of money in politics, featured prominently in his campaign as he sought to challenge established party positions.
