The Democratic Party has dealt a major blow to President Donald Trump's Republican Party in the US midterm elections, taking control of both chambers of Congress. In addition to regaining a majority in the House of Representatives, Democrats have won several key Senate races. The outcome is expected to reshape the political landscape for the remainder of Trump's presidency and create a new balance of power in American politics.

According to reports, Democrats have won 53 of the 100 seats in the Senate and are leading in three additional races. The party has also crossed the 218-seat threshold required for a majority in the 435-member House of Representatives. However, vote counting was still underway in several constituencies, meaning the final results could take more time.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries described the result as a historic comeback for his party. Addressing supporters in Washington, he said voters had rejected extremism and corruption. He also pledged that Democrats would work for the people in the House of Representatives.

In the Senate elections, Democrats won key seats in states including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, South Carolina, North Carolina and Maine. In Kansas, a Democrat was elected to the Senate after nearly 94 years. James Talarico's victory in Texas was also viewed as a major achievement for the party.

In Georgia, Senator Jon Ossoff was re-elected. In the same state, Keisha Lance Bottoms made history by becoming the first Black woman elected governor.

Democratic leaders have interpreted the election results as a sign that voters have lost confidence in Trump. However, Trump claimed on social media that Republicans would have won by a massive margin if he himself had been on the ballot. He also blamed several Republican leaders for the party's defeat.

Economic dissatisfaction appears to have played a major role in the election, according to survey findings. The cost of living, fuel prices and the rising cost of essential goods were among voters' main concerns. Some Republican leaders believe support for their party declined because the war with Iran led to higher fuel and food prices.

With control of Congress, Democrats will have greater opportunities to investigate the Trump administration, influence government spending and shape legislation. However, if the president vetoes any bill, Democrats would need a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override the veto. As a result, the party may face political obstacles in implementing its election promises.

In South Carolina, Republican candidate Darlene Graham called on her party to rethink its political strategy after suffering defeat. She said that although the election result was not what the party had expected, Republicans needed to find a way forward.
