Two Muslim women serving in the US House of Representatives, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, have secured victories once again in the country's midterm elections. Both Democratic politicians have won re-election for a fifth consecutive term in their respective constituencies, further strengthening their positions in Congress.

Ilhan Omar, who is of Somali descent, was elected from Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District. Meanwhile, Rashida Tlaib, who is of Palestinian descent, secured her fifth term in the House of Representatives from Michigan.

Both lawmakers have remained prominent figures in international politics for their longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and their strong criticism of Israel's military operations in Gaza.

According to a report by Fox News, Ilhan Omar secured her victory in Tuesday's election (November 3) while a federal investigation into her immigration records was ongoing. She defeated Republican candidate and former state police officer John Nagel in Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District.

Omar was first elected to the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterm elections. She is one of the first two Muslim women elected to the US Congress. With her fifth consecutive victory, the Democratic lawmaker has maintained her political position.

However, alongside her electoral success, the immigration-related investigation has once again brought her into the spotlight.

On October 12, officers from the US Department of Homeland Security's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) searched her residence in Washington, DC. As part of the investigation, her mobile phone, passport and computer were reportedly seized. Fox News also reported that DNA samples were collected.

Investigators are examining whether any information was concealed or false details were provided in the immigration records of Omar and her father.

According to the report, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security began investigating allegations of possible immigration fraud in 2016, during the final period of Barack Obama's administration. A source cited by Fox News claimed that the investigation was later closed in 2021, during Joe Biden's administration.

Omar has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing against her. No criminal charges have been brought against her in connection with the investigation so far.

Describing the investigation as politically motivated, she has alleged that President Donald Trump is attempting to put political pressure on her.

Meanwhile, Rashida Tlaib has secured her fifth consecutive term in Congress after defeating Republican candidate James D. Hooper in Michigan. Anadolu Agency reported the development.

Tlaib has made history as the first woman of Palestinian descent to be elected to the US Congress.

Both Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib have repeatedly called for an end to Israel's military operations in Gaza. They have also advocated ending US military assistance to Israel. The two lawmakers have described Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide.

Meanwhile, all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives were contested in this year's midterm elections. A party needs to secure at least 218 seats to gain a majority.

According to the latest vote-counting figures, Democrats have won 231 seats, while Republicans have secured 139. The figures have further strengthened the prospect of Democrats regaining control of the House of Representatives.
