Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju has accused the government of failing to take effective measures to address the real problems facing ordinary citizens despite coming to power.
According to him, the government's current plans appear to be limited to repeatedly increasing the prices of various commodities, further intensifying the hardships faced by the general public.
He made the remarks on Tuesday (November 3) while addressing a discussion meeting organised at the AB Party's central office in Bijoynagar, Dhaka, marking the first founding anniversary of the AB Volunteer Party.
Speaking as the chief guest, Manju said electricity and gas prices were increasing, while the prices of essential commodities were also continuing to rise.
He pointed out that although salaries of government employees had been increased, the cost of living for ordinary people continued to climb. As a result, public frustration and dissatisfaction were growing.
Raising questions about the country's political culture, the AB Party chairman said conventional politics had continued in Bangladesh for the past 54 years.
He observed that political parties, universities, schools, colleges, mosques, madrasas and various other institutions had been established with the objective of guiding the state in the right direction and improving people's living standards.
"Despite so many initiatives and institutions, why has the state failed to move forward along the desired path?" he questioned, stressing the need to find answers to this issue.
Manju also expressed concern over the lack of mutual understanding and communication among political parties.
He said a lack of familiarity and mutual understanding among political groups often created distrust and divisions, even over relatively minor issues.
According to him, people become interested in politics only when they can see their own interests and rights reflected in political activities.
Calling on the Volunteer Party to play an active role in establishing national unity, Manju said it was necessary to present people with a vision of what could be achieved if the nation could be united.
He also criticised the election promises made by political parties.
Manju alleged that the Awami League had deceived the people through various assurances and commitments. He further criticised the BNP, saying that although the party had promised to create employment opportunities for one crore people, it had failed to fulfil that commitment.
"Politics is not merely about making a series of attractive promises. The responsibility of political parties is to identify the real problems facing the people and take effective initiatives to resolve them," he said.
The meeting was moderated by AB Volunteer Party Member Secretary Tofazzal Hossain Romiz and chaired by the organisation's Convener Kefayet Hossain Tanvir.
Other speakers included AB Party Joint General Secretaries ABM Khalid Hasan, Md. Altaf Hossain and Shahadatullah Tutul; Expatriate Welfare Affairs Secretary Golam Rabbani Raja; AB Youth Party Member Secretary Hadiuzzaman Khokon; Employment Affairs Secretary Shafiul Bashar; Assistant Office Secretary Abdul Halim Nannu; Volunteer Party Joint Convener Abdul Mannan; and Joint Member Secretary Rashida Akter Mitu.
Mizanur Rahman Mithu and central committee member Khorshed Alam Palash also addressed the gathering, along with several other party leaders.
Among those present were AB Party Dhaka South Metropolitan Convener Abdul Halim Khokon, Dhaka North Metropolitan Convener Selim Khan, Relief and Rehabilitation Affairs Secretary Razia Sultana, Assistant Office Secretary Mohsinul Haque Chowdhury, Assistant Women Development Affairs Secretary Shahinur Akter Shila, Assistant Entrepreneurship and Employment Affairs Secretary Sumaiya Sharmin Farhana, Gazipur Metropolitan Member Secretary Masud Jamaddar and Natore District Convener Mokarrabur Rahman Nasim.
Leaders and activists from different levels of the AB Party and its affiliated organisations also attended the event.
