The presence of the Zika virus has been detected in two individuals in Chattogram, although the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has yet to issue an official declaration. The Chattogram Civil Surgeon's office is awaiting IEDCR's final decision.
Chattogram Civil Surgeon Dr. Jahangir Alam stated, "Tests conducted by a private lab yesterday (Monday) night identified the Zika virus in two people. We have informed IEDCR about the matter and are now awaiting their decision."
The two affected individuals are both over 40 years old—one male and one female. Medicine specialists Dr. Waliullah and Dr. Md. Nurunnabi referred the patients from their private chambers to 'Epic Health Care' for testing. It was there that the presence of Zika was detected, and health authorities were immediately notified.
Chattogram Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Towhidul Anwar explained, "Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika viruses are all detected using the same kit. Following symptomatic testing, Zika came back positive. However, the final announcement will come from IEDCR. They can choose to re-test the samples, or they can make a decision based on this report."
According to medical professionals, the affected individuals exhibited symptoms such as fever, rash, pain, and swelling of the hands and feet. While Zika virus typically carries a low risk of fatality, it poses a significant risk to pregnant women, as infection can hinder the normal development of the fetus.
The Deputy Civil Surgeon further noted that Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika viruses are all transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. Additionally, Civil Surgeon Dr. Jahangir Alam has also reported that 30 cases of Chikungunya have been identified in Chattogram.
