Amid the government’s “zero tolerance” policy against drugs and online gambling, allegations have emerged in Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar that a police officer took bribe to release a suspected online gambling agent.

According to allegations, on Monday (April 27) evening, ASI Morshed Alam of Pekua Police Station arrested a man named Md. Kaisar from in front of Gudikata Community Clinic in Taitong Union.

It was claimed that evidence of online gambling apps and financial transactions was found on his mobile phone.

Victim Kaisar said that he was first demanded 20,000 taka for release. After negotiation, 16,000 taka was taken through bKash, after which he was released. He also claimed that money was cashed out to a specific agent number from his mobile.

When contacted, ASI Morshed Alam initially denied the allegations, saying he is not very experienced with technical matters and would later respond after consulting colleagues. However, he was later accused of admitting the bribe through a WhatsApp call.

Pekua Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khairul Alam could not be reached for comment.

After the incident became public, anger spread among locals, who demanded a fair investigation and action against those responsible. Analysts say such allegations require impartial investigation to ensure transparency and accountability within law enforcement.
