Tension has arisen at Noakhali Government College following an attack on teachers, threats of murder, and vandalism at the principal’s office.
On Wednesday (April 29) night, Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal issued separate press releases from its central office announcing strict organizational actions against several leaders accused in the incident.
It was stated that three leaders of the college unit were permanently expelled for violating party discipline. They are Senior Vice President Murshidur Rahman Raihan, Vice President Aktaruzzaman Bishal, and Joint General Secretary Tanvir Hossain Shaon. Additionally, the college unit president Rashedul Islam Sohan has been suspended for two months. Former president Akbar Hossain has been asked to submit a written explanation within 48 hours.
The decisions were approved by Chhatra Dal central president Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir. The organization stated that attacks on teachers and vandalism are completely unacceptable and strict measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
Earlier that day, the incident occurred inside the principal’s office. According to college administration, former principal Professor Zakir Hossain visited the campus for personal work, and acting principal Professor ABM Shana Ullah and several teachers were having lunch together. At that time, a group of students suddenly entered the office and carried out vandalism and stopped the teachers from eating.
It is alleged that the attackers damaged furniture, snatched food plates, and misbehaved with teachers. Associate Professor Munshadur Rahman of the Bangla Department was physically assaulted, and Associate Professor Anwar Hossain of Islamic Studies Department was threatened with death.
In protest, the Teachers’ Association held an emergency meeting and announced a six-point demand including indefinite work stoppage until attackers are punished and legal action is taken. As a result, academic activities at the college have been suspended.
General Secretary of the Teachers’ Association Afsar Uddin Jewel said that returning to classes is not possible in an unsafe environment. Meanwhile, accused Aktaruzzaman Bishal denied the allegations and claimed the incident is being misrepresented.
Police from Sudharam Model Police Station said additional forces have been deployed at the college to maintain order and legal action will be taken after receiving a written complaint.
