16 injured including teacher and students in Mehendiganj lightning incident, panic among students

At least 16 people, including a teacher, were injured in lightning strikes at two separate secondary schools in Mehendiganj upazila of Barishal district. The incident occurred during class on Tuesday (April 28), creating panic among students and guardians.

According to reports, a loud lightning strike suddenly shook the Daudpur Temuhani Secondary School in Char Ekoria Union during class hours in the afternoon. Panicked students started running, and at one point, religious teacher Farukul Islam and 8 others fell ill. Some students reportedly lost consciousness temporarily.

Injured individuals include students from various grades. They were rescued by locals and teachers and taken to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

At the same time, another lightning incident occurred at Patabunia Secondary School in Alimabad Union, where another 8 students became ill due to panic.

Doctors at the emergency department said the students are not in critical condition. They received primary treatment and are under observation as a precaution.

School authorities said immediate measures were taken and safety precautions will be strengthened in the future.

The Upazila Secondary Education Officer said the injured are being monitored and institutions have been instructed to follow safety guidelines.
