A police officer has been withdrawn from duty following allegations of abducting a businessman and extorting money in Konabari area of Gazipur city.
The accused Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Azizul Haque was withdrawn on Tuesday night (April 28).
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Konabari Metro Police Station, Md. Iftekhar Hossain, confirmed the matter, saying that the action was taken immediately after receiving a written complaint from the victim, and an investigation is ongoing.
The complainant, businessman Md. Delwar Hossain, said that on April 26 at around 10 PM, while returning from his workplace in Chandana Chowrasta area, he was forcibly picked up after getting down from an auto-rickshaw near Rubel Filling Station.
He was taken to a secluded place in Baimail Harinchala area where he was physically assaulted and threatened with being implicated in a drug case, after which money was extorted from him.
He alleges that Tk 28,400 in cash was taken from him, and additional money was withdrawn through mobile banking.
Another youth named Sifat was also present during the incident. Money was also attempted to be taken from him, and some money was later taken through his family, according to allegations. However, he refused to give details but confirmed the incident.
Delwar further claimed he was threatened not to report the matter and was warned of danger if he informed anyone. Later, some money was returned and he was released. He also alleged that police later visited his home at night attempting to settle the matter.
However, ASI Azizul Haque has denied all allegations.
Police say the matter is under investigation and legal action will be taken if evidence is found.
