In a horrific road accident on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway at Bardiarhat in Mirsharai upazila, Chattogram, three people, including a Navy Merchant member, have been killed. At least 15 others were injured in the incident.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday (8 January) near the Dhumghat Forest Office. Eyewitnesses reported that just before the Dhumghat Bridge, a truck carrying timber was stopped at a check post of the Forest Department. At that moment, a bus from Chattogram heading to Dhaka operated by Saint Martin Transportation lost control and slammed into the stationary truck.
The front section of the bus was completely crushed, causing the immediate death of three people at the scene. Several of the injured, whose conditions were critical, were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
One of the deceased was Nafez Ahmed Ayon, a member of the Navy Merchant branch, and a resident of Masjidia village in Mirsharai. According to family sources, he was returning to his workplace in Madaripur after a 10-day leave. The identities of the other deceased and injured have not yet been confirmed.
Upon receiving the news, a team from the Bardiarhat Fire Service quickly arrived at the scene and conducted rescue operations. The station officer of the Fire Service said that after the rescue, the bodies of the three deceased were handed over to the police.
Borhan Uddin, Sub-Inspector of Joraganj Highway Police, said preliminary investigations indicate that the bus lost control, leading to the accident. The bus and the truck involved in the accident have been seized, and the police are working to identify the victims. Legal action is underway in connection with the incident.
