An allegation has been raised in Gazipur city that extortion was demanded using the name of a BNP leader from a drug rehabilitation centre. In this incident, a General Diary (GD) has been filed at the police station by the victims.
It is known that unknown individuals called the director of “Alor Jibon Drug Addiction Treatment Centre” from two separate mobile numbers and demanded 3 lakh taka, introducing themselves as influential persons. They also threatened serious consequences if the demand was not met. When they refused to pay the extortion money, the callers allegedly used abusive language and insulted them over the phone.
After the incident, the concerned director informed Rakib Uddin Sarkar Pappu, former joint convenor of Gazipur Metropolitan BNP. Later, he himself became the complainant and filed a General Diary at Tongi East Police Station.
Rakib Uddin Sarkar Pappu claimed that a syndicate is deliberately using his name to attempt extortion in order to politically discredit him. He also said that similar attempts had been made before.
Regarding the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi East Police Station Md. Mehedi Hasan said that the complaint has been taken seriously and investigation is ongoing to identify those involved. He confirmed that legal action will be taken after verifying initial evidence.
