Mexico, Brazil, and Spain have announced that they will increase humanitarian assistance for Cuba. At the same time, they have called for respect for Cuba’s sovereignty amid ongoing pressure from the United States.
After a meeting of left-wing leaders from various countries in Barcelona on Saturday, a joint statement was issued by the three countries expressing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Cuba.
The statement said that the Cuban people are currently facing a severe economic and humanitarian crisis. They believe that international cooperation must be increased to address this situation.
It was reported in various media that US President Donald Trump has adopted a policy of increasing pressure on Cuba. In particular, restrictions on fuel imports and threats of sanctions on other countries have led to fuel shortages and electricity crises in Cuba.
The joint statement further said that any action must be based on international law, sovereign equality of states, and peaceful resolution principles. They emphasized that the Cuban people themselves will determine their future.
Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said that the country is facing difficult conditions but will not surrender to threats. He also mentioned readiness to face possible military pressure.
On the other hand, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reaffirmed their commitment to international cooperation and multilateral diplomacy.
Analysts say this joint declaration is being seen as a diplomatic message against US policy, which may further increase international tensions surrounding the Cuba issue.
