A discussion was held in parliament regarding the role of media, journalistic accountability, and the spread of fake news. NCP MP Hasan Abdullah raised concerns about the role of some journalists and media outlets in past political events.

During a supplementary question, he said journalism has long been a challenging profession in the country, but some individuals and media outlets allegedly supported anti-democratic activities and human rights violations.

He also questioned whether individuals with controversial roles in the past should still remain active in the media sector.

In response, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasir Khan Chowdhury said that no one is above the law and legal action will be taken against anyone involved in illegal activities, regardless of profession.

He added that media freedom is important, but misuse of that freedom for violence or anti-state activities will not be tolerated.

The discussion also touched on misinformation and disinformation on social media. The minister said the government is working on monitoring systems and considering legal frameworks to address these issues
