At least 15 people have been killed after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Philippines. Several buildings collapsed, and tsunami warnings were issued across parts of Asia before being lifted in many areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck just before 7:40 AM local time near Mindanao island, with the epicenter under the sea.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported multiple aftershocks lasting more than an hour.

The worst damage was reported in General Santos City, where buildings collapsed and infrastructure was severely affected.

Videos circulating on social media show buildings, including a three-story restaurant structure, collapsing amid thick dust clouds.

Authorities reported damage to hospitals and universities, forcing evacuations and temporary closures.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered emergency response activation and school closures in affected areas, emphasizing child safety.

Tsunami alerts were issued in several countries including Indonesia and Japan, though many warnings were later lifted.
