PNN News Desk | Dhaka:

Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of BNP’s Standing Committee, has stated that the proposals presented for implementing the July National Charter are generally unacceptable and not reasonable. However, he expressed hope that BNP would welcome any solution-oriented decisions reached through discussions, as the current uncertainty cannot continue for long.

He made these remarks on Thursday during discussions between political parties and the National Consensus Commission. Salahuddin said, “A parliament or public assembly is formed when the basic structure of the constitution needs to be amended. Following the example of countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh could also adopt such a mechanism.”

He further emphasized that constitutional validity must be ensured when implementing the proposed reforms. If the people’s intent is incorporated into the constitution through a referendum and parliamentary approval, the reforms will be sustainable and legitimate. Otherwise, legal complexities will make it difficult to implement the proposals.

Salahuddin Ahmed added, “We want these reforms to be accepted as a national commitment, and for the next parliament and government to implement them. This is not merely a party issue but a necessity for the nation’s long-term interest.”

He elaborated on the process of constitutional amendment, presidential powers, the role of the judiciary, and legal obligations, stating, “No proposal can be effectively implemented without a proper legal basis. Therefore, actionable steps must be taken through discussion.”

The BNP leader also suggested that forming a national committee with commitments from all political parties would make the reforms effective and sustainable.
