PNN News Desk | Dhaka:
Akhtar Hossain, General Secretary of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has stated that the only way to effectively and sustainably implement the country’s reform proposals is through the adoption of a new constitution. Amending the old constitution would leave the reforms dependent on the goodwill of future governments, hindering their permanent implementation.
He made these remarks on Thursday during discussions with political parties and the National Consensus Commission regarding the implementation process of the July National Charter. Akhtar Hossain said, “The basic framework of the current constitution is insufficient to effectively adopt these reform proposals. Through a new constitution, these proposals can be implemented sustainably.”
He also noted that consensus has already been reached on key constitutional principles, including Article 70, the powers of the Prime Minister and President, decentralization of the judiciary, and other aspects of state structure. Implementing these decisions requires a new constitution.
Akhtar Hossain appealed to the public and the Consensus Commission, saying, “The hope generated among the people of the country through the events of ‘24 can only be fulfilled with a new constitution. This decision is not just for the party but necessary for the nation.”
He further mentioned that, according to the Chief Adviser, the next government will not oppose the decisions of the Consensus Commission but will instead ensure their continuous implementation.
The core message of Akhtar Hossain’s remarks emphasizes that sustainable reforms can only be achieved through a new constitution.
