National Citizens Party (NCP) member secretary Akhtar Hossain has alleged that an attempt is being made to hand over bank ownership again to controversial groups through a law that could put the country’s economy at risk.
He claimed that the new Bank Resolution Act may negatively impact the financial sector.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a labor rally organized by NCP’s labor wing National Labor Force in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh on Friday (May 1) on the occasion of International Workers’ Day.
Akhtar Hossain said that the law was passed ignoring opposition views in a way that could allow financial irregularities perpetrators to regain influence.
He expressed concern that this may push the economy into further crisis.
Regarding workers’ dignity, he said that laborers should never be undervalued. He emphasized ensuring fair wages and rights while reducing professional inequality.
Senior joint coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud said that representation of labor families in the current parliament is higher than before.
He also said that although workers and farmers play a role in coming to power, their importance decreases later, and this trend must change.
Farmer wing coordinator Saeed Ujjal said that although workers played a major role in recent movements, their representation in the political structure is still limited, and demanded increased participation of workers and farmers in parliament.
Demands raised at the rally included a minimum wage of 30,000 BDT, workplace safety, fair wages, workers’ share in profits, and increased protection and maternity benefits for women workers.
Speakers also emphasized trade union freedom, pro-worker policy formulation, and political representation for workers.
Workers from various professions and organizations participated in the rally, calling for united movements to protect workers’ rights.
