Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the government has taken a major plan to address the lack of healthcare services in rural areas of the country.
He announced that 100,000 health workers will be recruited nationwide, most of whom will be women.
He made this statement as the chief guest at a public meeting held at the Sylhet City Corporation premises on Saturday (May 2) at around 11:15 AM.
The Prime Minister said that the newly recruited health workers will go door to door in villages to provide healthcare services and awareness.
Special emphasis will be given to women’s health, diet, diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease prevention, along with cleanliness and health hygiene awareness.
He also said that increasing public awareness would reduce illness rates and allow hospitals to provide better treatment to patients.
Regarding waterlogging, he said that heavy rainfall causes water accumulation in cities and the government has taken initiatives such as canal excavation to solve the issue.
He warned that groundwater levels are rapidly declining, which may create a major crisis in the future.
He also expressed concern about river pollution, citing Surma and Buriganga rivers, saying that unplanned waste disposal is severely polluting rivers.
On transportation, he said the government is prioritizing rail development alongside roads to reduce travel costs and road pressure.
He further said that the government is working to reopen closed factories, expand the IT sector, and create employment opportunities for youth.
He assured that the Sylhet IT park will be launched soon to create opportunities for young people.
After the meeting, large crowds gathered on various roads in the city surrounding the Prime Minister’s visit. Later, he attended various development project inaugurations and inspections in Sylhet.
