Former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Ruhin Hossain Prince, has demanded immediate declaration of a national minimum wage and ensuring the rights of informal sector workers, farmers, and agricultural laborers.

He made this call as the chief guest at a rally in Purana Paltan, Dhaka, on Friday (May 1) on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, organized by Bangladesh Domestic Workers Union Central Committee.

Ruhin Hossain Prince said that long-standing movements are ongoing to ensure fair wages, safety, and dignity for domestic workers at home and abroad.

He emphasized the implementation of a 11-point demand for domestic workers.

He added that the biggest challenge for workers is ensuring employment and recognition of their work.

Although legal recognition exists on paper, in many cases labor law rights are not properly implemented.

Speakers at the rally said that domestic workers contribute significantly to the economy but still lack proper protection and social dignity.

Therefore, proper valuation of their labor and legal protection is essential.

Special guest Luna Nur, General Secretary of CPB Dhaka City Committee, also spoke.

Domestic Workers Union President Myna Akter, General Secretary Afroja Akter, and other leaders also addressed the event.

After the rally, a protest march was held through different roads and ended again at Purana Paltan.

Participants called for united movements to ensure workers’ rights and announced continuation of programs until demands are met.
