Opposition leader and Shafiqur Rahman has emphasized making the National Parliament the main platform for raising public rights and demands in parliamentary politics.

He said that going to parliament is not a formality but a means to raise the suffering of ordinary people.

He made these remarks at a workers’ rally held on Friday (May 1) in front of the south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, organized by Bangladesh Labor Welfare Federation.

Shafiqur Rahman said that although there is a long history of workers’ rights movements, their condition has not changed significantly.

He alleged that workers’ demands are ignored most of the year and only promises are made on May Day.

He said that no society can be sustainable without ensuring workers’ dignity and vowed that the opposition will continue to fight for workers’ rights inside and outside parliament.

Criticizing leftist politics, he claimed that workers are often used in movements but their interests are ultimately ignored.

He said conflict-based politics should be replaced with mutual respect and cooperation between workers and employers.

He also highlighted migrant workers, saying they contribute significantly to the economy but do not receive proper dignity and often suffer abroad, urging the government to take more responsibility.

Jamaat-e-Islami leaders at the rally demanded fair wages, safe working environments, and protection of workers’ rights, saying that a just society can only be built through pro-worker policies.
