Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, has remarked that full political consensus among parties has not yet been achieved on the path to a democratic transition. However, he expressed hope that, over time, political parties will be able to reach such a consensus through dialogue and discussion.
He made these comments today, Thursday, at an exchange of views session titled “Expectations and Challenges for Free and Fair Elections: Responsibilities of Government, Political Parties, and Civil Society in Organizing Successful Elections”, organized by the citizens’ platform “Nagorik Coalition” at the Sir. DAP Auditorium in Dhaka. Representatives of various political parties and members of civil society attended the session.
Salahuddin Ahmed said that an independent Election Commission, an independent judiciary, a caretaker government system, and free media are essential for free, fair, and impartial elections. If these are ensured, there will be no future challenges.
Regarding reforms, he noted that reforms that can be implemented quickly through executive orders or ordinances are being carried out by the government. On the other hand, long-term reforms can be implemented by the current government or, if necessary, by a future government.
On constitutional amendments, Salahuddin Ahmed said that the National Parliament is the only legitimate forum. Outside of it, discussions may occur, but no precedent should be set that could later be challenged in court.
Regarding the July killings trial, he said that justice is not conditional and cannot be bound by a time limit. The public understands this as well. Regardless of which government comes to power, the judicial process must continue.
