One-and-a-half-year-old child killed by throat slitting in Sylhet; mother detained

A tragic incident has occurred in the Jalalabad Police Station area of Sylhet city where a one year and eight months old girl child was allegedly killed by slitting her throat. The child’s mother, Subina Begum, has been detained by police. The incident has created a sensation in the area.

The incident took place early Thursday morning in the old Kalaruka village. The deceased child’s name was Toha. After the incident, grief and panic spread among local residents.

According to family sources, at the time of Fajr prayer, when the child woke up, her father Amir Ali asked his wife to pray and went to the mosque. Before he returned home after prayers, other children in the family informed him that little Toha had been found in a bloodied condition. Later, neighbors rushed to the scene and found the child dead.

Upon receiving the news, police quickly reached the spot and recovered the child’s body. The body was sent to the morgue of Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam said that the child’s mother, Subina Begum, has been taken to the police station for questioning from the scene. It has initially been learned that she had been suffering from mental health issues for a long time and was under treatment.

Police said that the detained woman is not yet able to speak normally. Once she becomes mentally stable, detailed interrogation will be conducted. Efforts are ongoing to uncover the real cause of the incident through investigation.
