College Student Killed in Land Dispute in Gaibandha; Two Women Detained for Questioning

A college student was killed in a stabbing incident over a land dispute in Purba Piarapur area of Gaibandha Sadar upazila. His elder brother was also seriously injured and is undergoing treatment in hospital. After the incident, two women were detained for questioning although the main accused fled.

The deceased, Ruman (18), was a first-year honors student at Gaibandha Government College. His injured brother, Ruhit (20), is currently hospitalized.

According to police and local sources, two families in Boali union had a long-standing dispute over land boundaries. The conflict escalated on Sunday night into an argument.

At one stage, the accused Rakib allegedly attacked Ruhit with a sharp weapon. When Ruman tried to save his brother, he was also attacked and seriously injured.

Locals rushed them to Gaibandha General Hospital, where doctors declared Ruman dead. Ruhit is receiving treatment.

Tension spread in the area after the incident. Although the accused went into hiding, police detained his mother and wife for questioning.

The Officer-in-Charge of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station, Abdullah Al Mamun, said operations are ongoing to arrest those involved and the body has been sent for autopsy.
