Two teenage girls from Shreepur upazila of Gazipur, who left home due to social media temptation, have been rescued and reunited with their family through coordinated efforts of district administrations and a humanitarian Facebook post that went viral within two days.

It is learned that the two daughters of Sohail Rana from Purbya Nij Mawna village—Sanjida (14) and Atiya (13)—went missing from home on Saturday morning.

Initially, family members searched among relatives and acquaintances but found no trace of them.

Later it was discovered that, influenced by the persuasive words of a known person on social media and driven by a minor emotional conflict, the two sisters left home. However, after entering an unfamiliar environment, they quickly fell into trouble and got lost, eventually reaching Jamalpur.

There, local resident Jahangir Alam found them in a helpless condition. Taking the matter seriously, he posted their photos and identity details on his Facebook account, requesting help to find their family.

After the post spread widely on social media, it came to the attention of the Jamalpur District Administration. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Yusuf immediately took initiative and contacted the Gazipur District Administration.

Under the instruction of Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Md. Nurul Karim Bhuiyan, the Shreepur Upazila Administration launched an immediate search operation. Later, after local inquiries, the identity of the girls’ family was confirmed and their parents were contacted.

Two days after going missing, on Tuesday, the sisters were handed over to their family from a secure shelter center in Jamalpur. Their parents broke down emotionally upon seeing their daughters return.

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Md. Nurul Karim Bhuiyan said timely rescue ensured that the girls did not fall victim to any unwanted incident. He urged parents to be more aware of their children’s online activities.

Authorities have also instructed that arrangements be made to continue the girls’ education and ensure that financial constraints do not interrupt their studies.

Officials say the incident highlights both the risks of social media and its positive use. A responsible citizen’s Facebook post and swift administrative action brought a family back together.

Experts believe that ensuring digital safety for children requires joint awareness from families, educational institutions, and society. Regular education about online deception and stranger danger is also necessary.

This incident serves as both a warning for parents and an example of social responsibility and positive use of technology.
