Tension has spread in the political arena following a clash between activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Homna upazila of Cumilla. In this incident, the BNP has filed a written complaint at the local police station, accusing Jamaat activists of attacking and vandalizing the BNP office.
On Tuesday (June 3), BNP leader Helal Uddin Sarkar signed as the complainant in the written case filed at Homna Police Station. The incident took place earlier on Monday (June 2) afternoon in Chandarchar union of the upazila.
According to local sources, a Jamaat organizational meeting was arranged in front of the Chandarchar Union BNP office. A dispute first began between activists of the two parties over the selection of the meeting location. The situation then escalated into a physical confrontation.
The BNP claims that organizing a political program in front of their party office was against political etiquette. When they raised objections, Jamaat activists allegedly became angry and attacked BNP workers, also vandalizing the party office.
Homna Upazila BNP President Md. Mohiuddin said, “An organizational meeting was held in front of our party office without permission. When we objected, our leaders and activists were attacked and the office was damaged. We demand a fair investigation and necessary action from the administration.”
On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami has denied the allegations. Kumilla North District Jamaat Ameer Professor Abdul Matin said, “The allegation of attack and vandalism has no basis. There may have been a minor altercation surrounding a meeting, but claims of planned attacks or office vandalism are not true. The truth will be revealed through investigation.”
Homna Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Thomas Barua said that a written complaint has been received from the BNP side. The matter is being investigated seriously, and legal action will be taken after verification.
After the incident, political tension prevails in the area. However, local administration says the situation is currently under control.
