Two people, including a teenage boy, have died in separate lightning strike incidents in Chapainawabganj.

The incidents occurred on Wednesday (June 3) afternoon in different locations of Sadar upazila’s Islampur union and the municipality area.

According to local sources, 15-year-old Miraj was working with his father collecting mangoes in an orchard in Bhabanipur village of Sadar upazila. In the afternoon, as rain suddenly began, they were trying to pack and store the harvested mangoes when lightning struck, seriously injuring him. Family members rushed him to Chapainawabganj 250-bed District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

In another incident, Manik Ali (45) was struck by lightning while working near his home in Ward No. 3 of the municipality area. Locals rescued him in critical condition and took him to the district hospital, where doctors also declared him dead during treatment.

Islampur Union Parishad Chairman Jasim Uddin said Miraj died due to lightning while working in the mango orchard during rainfall, leaving the area in mourning.

Former municipal councilor Raju Ahmed said locals tried to take Manik Ali to the hospital quickly after the lightning strike, but he could not be saved.

Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ekramul Hossain confirmed the deaths of the two individuals and said necessary procedures have been completed.

During the monsoon season, the risk of lightning increases, and experts have advised people to avoid open fields, orchards, and outdoor spaces during bad weather.
