A mild earthquake was felt in Dhaka and several other parts of the country on Tuesday afternoon, causing brief panic among people. However, no major damage was reported.

The Meteorological Department said the tremor was felt at 11:41 AM. The epicenter was in Bhawal area of Mymensingh’s Bhaluka. The magnitude was 3.4 on the Richter scale, considered a low-intensity earthquake.

Rubaiyat Kabir confirmed the matter, saying that since it was a small earthquake, there was no situation of serious panic.

During the earthquake, people in different parts of the capital felt shaking and many shared their experiences on social media. A resident of Crescent Road said he suddenly felt dizziness and only realized it after receiving an earthquake alert on his mobile phone.

Experts say Bangladesh is in a seismically vulnerable zone due to its tectonic location near the junction of three major plates. Small and medium earthquakes are frequently felt in the country.

Recently, there has been growing concern about increased earthquake activity originating within the country, especially in relatively low-risk areas like the southwest region.
