Islami Andolan Bangladesh has ultimately decided to contest the elections independently. The party announced that it will field its own candidates in 268 parliamentary constituencies and support candidates from like-minded parties in the remaining 32 seats, ensuring presence in all 300 constituencies in the upcoming national elections.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the party’s central office in Purana Paltan, Dhaka, on Friday (16 January) afternoon. Party leaders explained that differences and lack of trust with the Jamaat-e-Islami-led electoral alliance prompted them to contest independently.
Political observers note that this decision effectively disrupts efforts to unite Islamist votes. Currently, Islamist politics is split into three distinct streams: the 10-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh under Chormonai Pir, and several smaller Islamist parties aligned with BNP.
Gazi Ataur Rahman, senior Joint Secretary and spokesperson of Islami Andolan, said that they faced discrimination in matters of policy, justice, and mutual respect. He explained that the main reason for not joining the Jamaat alliance was unfair treatment and concerns over achieving objectives.
Party sources indicate that the distance arose primarily over seat allocation, with Islami Andolan expecting more constituencies for their candidates, while Jamaat wanted to limit them. Ultimately, both sides failed to reach an agreement.
Political analysts say this division reflects long-standing ideological differences, leadership issues, and mutual distrust, which could weaken the Islamist vote and complicate competition. Jamaat stated that they had reserved significant seats for Islami Andolan and offered discussion opportunities, but the lack of agreement led Islami Andolan to choose an alternative path. Analysts note that voter behavior will determine the real impact of this split.
