A gas leak explosion in a house in Jatrabari, Dhaka, has left three members of the same family, including a child, severely burned. The tragic incident occurred just before 1:45 AM on Wednesday, July 9, on the ground floor of a six-story building on Shahid Faruk Road, near Khadimul Quran Women’s Madrasa lane in Jatrabari.

The burn victims are Ripon (40), his wife Iti (30), and their three-year-old daughter Rafia. They were immediately admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute following the explosion.

Neighbor Taslima Moni, who helped bring the victims to the hospital, said they heard a loud bang around 1:45 AM. Upon rushing to the scene after hearing cries, they found the three family members badly burnt, and the doors and windows of the house were broken. They quickly rescued and took them to the hospital.

Taslima Moni further explained that they believe gas had leaked and accumulated in the house. The explosion likely occurred when a mosquito coil was lit at night.

Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, the resident surgeon of the emergency department at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, reported that Ripon has burns on 70% of his body, Iti on 45%, and young Rafia on 90%. He noted that all three victims are in critical condition.

Ramna Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion and identify those responsible.
