The 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) has commenced in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Foreign ministers and representatives from nearly 40 countries—including the United States, China, Russia, and Bangladesh—are attending the summit, placing Malaysia at the heart of both regional and global diplomatic activities.

According to Malaysia’s state news agency Bernama and other media outlets, the summit—chaired by Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan—is prioritizing discussions on Southeast Asia's geopolitical challenges, economic instability, the South China Sea issue, and the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on his first official trip to Asia, is attending the summit and is scheduled to hold separate bilateral meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. These meetings are expected to focus on Indo-Pacific security, concerns over trade wars, and China's influence in the South China Sea.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim voiced concern over proposed U.S. tariffs, urging a shift away from weaponizing trade toward expanding interregional commerce. "This is not a passing storm, but a new reality for the global economy," he said, calling for strengthened cooperation among ASEAN member states.

On the Myanmar political crisis, Malaysia made its stance clear: all parties must act responsibly to create a peaceful and credible environment for elections.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain arrived in Malaysia on Wednesday evening (July 9, 2025) to attend the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. He was welcomed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia, Md. Shameem Ahsan. Diplomatic sources indicate that South Asian countries are taking a firm stance on the Rohingya crisis, legal migration, and regional stability through the ASEAN platform.

The multilateral summit, which will run until July 12, is expected to produce a joint declaration and multiple bilateral agreements. Malaysia is aiming to establish a stronger international diplomatic presence through this summit during its ASEAN chairmanship.
