Excavator of canal excavation project set on fire in Khagrachhari; administration investigating

An incident of arson has occurred involving an excavator used in a government canal excavation project in Guimara upazila of Khagrachhari. The machine was partially damaged in the fire set by miscreants. The incident has created concern in the area.

The incident took place late Thursday night in the Pilak canal area of Hafchhari Union in Guimara upazila. Locals suspect that miscreants went there at night and set fire to the excavator.

Project president and Hafchhari Union Parishad panel chairman Angyajoy Marma said that the excavator used in ongoing canal re-excavation work was set on fire. It has not yet been confirmed who is involved in the incident.

On Friday morning, Guimara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Miskatul Tamanna visited the site. She said that the Pilak canal excavation work began on April 28 and a significant portion has already been completed. It is suspected that such incidents may have been carried out to obstruct project implementation.

She further said that those involved will be identified and legal action will be taken.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Sohrawardi, Officer-in-Charge of Guimara Police Station, said that police have visited the site and an investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the arson. A team of law enforcement is working on the matter.
