The Election Commission (EC) has upheld the cancellation of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate AKM Fazlul Haque’s nomination for the Chittagong-9 constituency (Kotwali–Baklia), disqualifying him from contesting the upcoming election.

On Monday (January 12), the third day of appeal hearings was held at the EC auditorium. Fazlul Haque’s appeal against the initial disqualification, based on dual citizenship allegations, was rejected, maintaining the EC’s previous decision.

Fazlul Haque stated that he has applied to renounce his U.S. citizenship and has scheduled a meeting with the U.S. Embassy regarding the matter. However, the EC did not accept this argument during the appeal. He alleged that several BNP candidates were considered eligible despite only having applied to renounce citizenship, claiming unequal treatment. He added that he may take the matter to higher courts after consulting legal experts.
