Staff Report: PNN
The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka has issued a warning to American citizens residing in Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary election and concurrent referendum. The advisory was released on Friday morning via the embassy’s website and social media platforms Facebook and X.

The embassy notice stated that political violence or extremist attacks could occur during the February 12 elections and referendum. Such incidents may target gatherings, polling stations, and religious sites. Therefore, U.S. citizens are advised to avoid protests and gatherings and to exercise additional caution near any large crowds.

The advisory further noted that even peaceful demonstrations can sometimes turn confrontational. Therefore, Americans are urged to stay away from large gatherings and always ensure their personal safety.

The Bangladesh government has imposed restrictions on motorcycle travel from February 10 and on all forms of transport on February 11 and 12. During this period, the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka will provide services on a limited scale.

The embassy specifically advised U.S. citizens to:

  • Avoid large crowds and demonstrations

  • Stay aware of their surroundings at all times

  • Monitor local news

  • Keep mobile phones charged for emergency communication

  • Review personal safety plans

  • Plan alternate routes for travel

This advisory serves as a call to observe and remain alert to the security situation within the country.
