United States and Indonesia to cooperate on defense technology development

The United States and Indonesia have signed a new partnership agreement to strengthen defense cooperation. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the initiative as an important step for regional stability.

The agreement was signed after a meeting at the Pentagon on Monday with Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. Both sides agreed to expand military cooperation, technological development, and strategic partnership.

Hegseth said the partnership reflects the “strength and potential” of bilateral relations and will help maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. He also noted that the two countries’ armed forces participate in more than 170 joint military exercises each year, deepening their relationship.

Under the agreement, both countries will focus on developing maritime, sub-sea, and autonomous defense technologies, as well as strengthening modern military capabilities and joint readiness.

The Indonesian defense minister said the cooperation will make the defense relationship more sustainable for future generations.

Meanwhile, discussions had circulated in the media a day earlier about a U.S. proposal regarding the use of Indonesian airspace for military aircraft. Reports suggested Washington had requested broader access.

However, Indonesia’s defense ministry stated that the matter is still in its early stages and no final decision has been made. It also emphasized that full sovereignty over national airspace will remain with Indonesia.

The document under discussion is non-binding and remains at a preliminary draft stage.

The development comes as Indonesia continues to expand its defense diplomacy with multiple international partners.
