The impact of protests and violence following the teenage rape incident in Khagrachhari, a hill district, has not yet subsided. The indefinite blockade called by Jumma-Student Janta across three hill districts continues, demanding the arrest and trial of all suspects involved in the rape, along with eight other demands. The administration has imposed Section 144, restricting public movement.
On Monday (29 September) at 8:00 a.m., only a few auto-rickshaws were seen moving on the streets of Khagrachhari town. Shops remained closed, and law enforcement personnel were stationed at various corners. People gathering in groups were being questioned by authorities.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Kazi Wazed Ali said police have been deployed at key points, and no untoward incidents occurred during the blockade. Guimara Police Station OC Md. Enamul Haque Chowdhury stated that law enforcement patrols are ongoing and the situation is under control.
The incident occurred last Tuesday night around 9:00 p.m., when a teenage girl was allegedly gang-raped on her way to private tuition. She was rescued unconscious from a field later that night. One person was arrested, and the court granted a six-day remand. In protest, Jumma-Student Janta began their blockade early Saturday morning.
