A woman in Nalchity upazila of Jhalakathi jumped into the Sugandha River with her five-year-old daughter. However, both the mother and child were rescued alive due to the quick response of local residents. They are currently safe and under medical observation.
The incident occurred around 9:30pm on Friday at the Nalchity Ferry Ghat area. Nalchity Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhiduzzaman confirmed the matter.
Police said the rescued woman is Lucky Akter, a resident of Harikeli area in Nalchity upazila. She recently divorced Saiful Islam, a resident of Nalchity town.
According to eyewitnesses, Lucky Akter went to the ferry terminal with her daughter at night. At one point, people saw the two jump into the river. As soon as the incident came to their attention, nearby residents rushed into the water and launched a rescue operation. Within a short time, they managed to rescue both mother and daughter alive and arranged initial medical treatment.
During preliminary questioning, Lucky Akter said she had been experiencing family problems and mental pressure for a long time during her married life. She said that even after the divorce, she remained under stress due to various issues, which led her to take such a decision.
Meanwhile, her former husband Saiful Islam denied the allegations. He claimed that their divorce took place around 20 days ago and that he had no communication with Lucky Akter for the past three months. He also said he did not know why such an incident occurred.
Nalchity Police Station OC Touhiduzzaman said all aspects of the incident are being investigated. The mother and child are currently safe, and necessary legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The quick humanitarian efforts of local residents helped prevent a major tragedy. The incident has created widespread discussion in the area.
