The Bangladesh Army has stepped in to support the civilian administration in dealing with the severe flood situation caused by continuous heavy rainfall and mountain water surges in different upazilas of Chattogram. Army personnel are conducting rescue operations, delivering emergency assistance and distributing relief materials in the affected areas.
In a press release issued on Saturday, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) said the army was deployed under the “In Aid to Civil Power” framework following an urgent request from the Chattogram district administration. Members of the 10 Infantry Division and 24 Infantry Division are currently working in various flood-affected areas of the district.
Due to heavy rainfall and strong mountain torrents, widespread waterlogging and flash floods have occurred in Lohagara, Satkania, Chandanaish and Banshkhali upazilas. Nearly four lakh people in these areas have been stranded by floodwaters and are facing a humanitarian crisis.
A special rescue team from the 10 Infantry Division, equipped with necessary equipment, is working on the ground to evacuate affected people to safer locations, conduct rescue operations and deliver essential assistance.
Meanwhile, army personnel from the 24 Infantry Division have also been deployed in Boalkhali, Hathazari and Fatikchhari upazilas as the flood situation has deteriorated there. The army has already set up three temporary camps to coordinate rescue and relief activities in the affected regions.
On Saturday, a special relief operation was conducted in the flooded areas of Sundarpur, Harualchhari and surrounding locations of Fatikchhari under the Lakshmichhari Zone of the Guimara Region. Army personnel reached remote areas using boats and other means of transport and distributed food and essential relief supplies among at least 100 affected families.
Relevant army sources said priority is being given to areas where communication systems remain disrupted and people are suffering the most. Army personnel are working around the clock to meet the food and emergency needs of flood victims.
ISPR said the Bangladesh Army will continue search, rescue, relief distribution and humanitarian assistance activities until the flood situation improves. Additional manpower and relief materials will be deployed if required based on the evolving situation.
