He made the statement on Wednesday (28 January) night during a courtesy meeting with newly appointed UNHCR Country Representative Ivo Frajzen at the state guesthouse Jamuna. The Chief Adviser emphasized that since the Rohingya crisis originated in Myanmar, the solution must also come from there. He noted that keeping refugees confined in camps for extended periods is not a sustainable approach.
During the meeting, UNHCR representative Frajzen highlighted the significant reduction in international aid to the Rohingya camps. He stressed the importance of increasing refugees’ self-reliance and expanding livelihood-based activities.
Responding, Dr. Yunus said that although multiple international and high-level initiatives have been undertaken over the past year, the Rohingya crisis has yet to receive the desired level of global attention. He expressed concern that a frustrated younger generation deprived of technology and opportunities is emerging in the camps, which could pose risks to regional stability. He added that delayed repatriation has increased social and security tensions with local communities.
The current situation at Bhasanchar was also discussed. The Chief Adviser noted that some refugees are leaving Bhasanchar and spreading across the mainland, creating new challenges for domestic security.
The discussion also touched upon the upcoming national elections and referendum. Dr. Yunus stated that Bangladesh is fully prepared to conduct a free, fair, and festive election. He emphasized that the interim government is committed to making the election inclusive and enjoyable, particularly for new voters.
UNHCR representative Ivo Frajzen confirmed that the organization’s new chief, Barham Salih, will soon visit Bangladesh to inspect the Rohingya camps.
The Chief Adviser called upon the international community to continue humanitarian support for the Rohingyas and apply effective pressure on Myanmar to expedite repatriation. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring credible and orderly elections.
Senior officials, including SDG Coordinator Lamia Morshed, were present at the meeting. Dr. Yunus expressed hope that the new UNHCR representative will play a more active role in resolving the crisis.
