At Barishal University, uncertainty has arisen regarding the salary and allowances of ten newly appointed teachers. The appointments were made ignoring the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) no-objection letters.
Sources say that in March and June 2024, 51 lecturer positions were advertised. After a year without appointments, the UGC blocked these positions. On July 7, 2025, the university advertised 10 of the 51 positions for reappointment.
Since the appointments ignored UGC’s no-objection letters, issues arose in processing salaries and allowances. Despite taking classes, conducting exams, and performing administrative duties, the new teachers have not yet received payment.
Several teachers, requesting anonymity, said, “It is embarrassing to work without pay despite being appointed. Our joining letters have not arrived yet.” Ishrat Jahan Rickza, lecturer of Soil, Water, and Environment, said, “We joined but still haven’t received salaries. The UGC’s no-objection caused this issue. Hopefully, it will be resolved soon.”
Mohammad Sajib, lecturer of Mathematics, said, “Joining letters are still not effective, so salary processing hasn’t started. We may receive payment next month.”
Md. Atikur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Finance Department, said no letters regarding salary have reached them. “Once received, processing will begin.” Khan Sanjia Sultana, Acting Registrar, said, “Salaries are on hold due to UGC’s no-objection report. No instructions have come yet.”
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Taufiq Alam said, “There were some technical issues. We are working on it. The problem will be solved very soon.” Teachers hope the administration will take prompt action to resolve salary and allowance issues.
