A seven-day state mourning period begins on July 3 in Iran to honor Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The ceremonies will take place across Iran and Iraq, with participation from millions of people and international dignitaries.
Khamenei, 86, died on February 28 in a joint US-Israeli airstrike along with several family members. His burial was delayed due to war conditions and is now being conducted with full state honors.
The first day in Tehran will feature international tributes. On July 4 and 5, the body will lie in state at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla complex for public mourning.
On July 6 and 7, funeral processions will take place across Tehran. The body will then be moved to Qom, a major Shia religious center.
On July 8, the remains will be taken to Iraq for ceremonies in Najaf and Karbala.
Finally, on July 9, Khamenei will be buried at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.
Born in 1939, he led Iran since 1989 after Ayatollah Khomeini’s death.
This ceremony is also seen as the first major state event under new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
