Western Europe is facing a record-breaking heatwave that has severely disrupted daily life. Early reports indicate multiple deaths due to extreme temperatures, which have exceeded 40°C (104°F) and are moving eastward toward Germany and Poland.

Germany’s national meteorological service reported that temperatures near Saarbrücken reached 41°C (106°F), the highest recorded this summer so far, though the figure is still being verified.

Record highs have also been reported in the UK, France, and Switzerland. France has reported the highest number of heat-related deaths, affecting both elderly and younger populations.

Transportation systems, power supply, and daily life have been significantly disrupted across Europe. Rail delays, energy strain, and cancellation of outdoor activities are widespread.

German meteorologist Karsten Brandt said temperatures could exceed 40°C in some regions over the weekend.

Germany’s rail operator Deutsche Bahn has allowed free cancellation of long-distance tickets due to the extreme heat. Monitoring of rail infrastructure has also been increased due to risks from overheating.

Hospitals in France are overwhelmed with heat-related patients, and agriculture is also being affected. Public health warnings have been issued in Switzerland and the UK.

Experts say the heatwave is caused by an “omega block” weather pattern, where hot air remains trapped over a region for an extended period, making temperatures feel up to 18°C higher than normal.

Weather experts expect the heatwave to gradually ease after the weekend, though thunderstorms may follow.

The World Meteorological Organization warned that climate change will make such extreme heat events more frequent. Researchers say such temperatures would be nearly impossible without human-driven climate change.

People across Europe have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and stay hydrated until conditions normalize.
