Salahuddin Ahmed: No Risk of Election Code Violations in Tarique Rahman’s Northern Bangladesh Tour

Salahuddin Ahmed, a standing committee member of BNP, stated that during the upcoming four-day northern Bangladesh tour of the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, there is no risk of violating the election code. He claimed the tour is not related to political campaigning.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday (January 8) at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Salahuddin Ahmed said the four-day trip is fully personal, religious, social, and humanitarian. According to the schedule, Tarique Rahman will depart from Dhaka on the morning of January 11 and return on January 14.

Regarding potential crowds or violations of election code, Salahuddin Ahmed said they view the trip differently. He noted that paying respect to martyrs during the 2024 student and public uprising is a national duty. Tarique Rahman had long wished to visit martyrs’ graves but could not for various reasons.

He also said that organizational measures have already been taken against those who rebelled by acting outside party decisions or alliance agreements in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Discussions are ongoing with those expressing frustration to resolve the matter.

Salahuddin Ahmed further noted that due to seat allocation and alliance politics in large political parties, many capable candidates are denied nominations, which causes some dissatisfaction. However, these issues are expected to be resolved through discussion.

Regarding political parties’ participation in elections, he said parties are largely in agreement on holding fair and participatory elections. Complaints raised are being submitted to the Election Commission, which, along with the government, will try to resolve them.
