A proposal to repeal and amend several important ordinances aimed at preventing autocracy and maintaining state balance has sparked controversy in the political arena. In this context, Islami Andolan Bangladesh criticized BNP and expressed concern.
In a statement sent to the media on Friday, the party claimed that the interim government’s ordinances had played an important role in preventing autocratic tendencies. However, the initiative to repeal or amend these ordinances raises the risk of repeating authoritarian trends.
Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman, spokesperson for the party, stated that BNP’s political foundation and power consolidation were historically established through referendums. He noted that BNP had previously supported referendums.
He accused BNP of now using constitutional interpretations to justify recommending the repeal of referendum-related ordinances. The party also expressed concern over efforts to repeal ordinances related to human rights protection, enforced disappearances, and anti-corruption measures.
The statement further added that these measures are contradictory to the spirit of popular movements and the expectations of the people. Islami Andolan believes such decisions could negatively affect the political sphere.
The party called on the government to approve the relevant ordinances promptly to strengthen democratic structures and prevent the resurgence of authoritarianism, noting that BNP had previously suffered under authoritarian rule.
