Shafiqur Rahman, opposition leader, stated that fascism can spread from one individual to another, and it begins when public decisions are ignored or denied. He said, “The people no longer want to see fascism in the country.”
Speaking at a rally organized by the Dhaka district branch of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Keraniganj on Friday afternoon, he criticized BNP for now claiming the constitution lacks provisions for referendums, although the first referendum in the country was conducted during its founding leadership.
He questioned why it would be acceptable then but unacceptable now. Shafiqur Rahman alleged that even when the public expressed their opinion through referendums, the government ignored it and pursued constitutional amendments. He explained the difference between amendment and reform, stating that sections creating autocratic tendencies should be fully removed for proper reform.
He urged the youth to use patriotism and moral strength to fight for their rights and said that political struggle would continue until people’s rights are fully established.
He also criticized proposals regarding fuel shortages and partial online classes in education, calling them ineffective and potentially harmful to normal learning. He challenged the government’s claim that there is no fuel crisis, stating that people still have to wait for hours in queues to obtain fuel.
Shafiqur Rahman called on the government to acknowledge the real situation and openly discuss solutions with all parties.
