Hamidur Rahman Azad criticized BNP’s position on constitutional amendments, claiming that initiatives to change the constitution in favor of party interests could create new fascism.
He spoke at a Jamaat-e-Islami district-level meeting in Faridpur on Friday morning, held at Al-Falah Auditorium in West Khabashpur.
He said the recent referendum aimed at reform, not amendment. He added that the opposition party had proposed postponing bills in parliament and clearly supported reform.
Azad emphasized that due to structural limitations of the national parliament, fundamental changes cannot be achieved solely through amendment bills. Instead of partial changes, structural reform is necessary.
He criticized statements by the parliament’s Chief Whip that allegedly misrepresented Jamaat’s position. He highlighted that in the past, senior BNP leaders also issued strict statements on the constitution.
According to him, repeated amendments to the current constitution have created a one-sided system, hindering democratic development. The public has supported reform to resolve this situation.
At the meeting, party leaders also discussed the current political situation and their stance on constitutional reform.
