NCP PREPARES FOR CONTESTING LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS ALONE

The National Citizen Party (NCP) is strengthening its organizational structure ahead of the upcoming local government elections, focusing on contesting independently rather than under any political alliance.

Party senior leaders said preparations are underway to participate in elections at all levels of local government under their own symbol. However, they have not ruled out future cooperation depending on political realities.

According to party leaders, the local government elections are not just electoral contests but also an opportunity to expand grassroots organization and develop new leadership.

NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan said the party is preparing to contest elections in city corporations, municipalities, upazilas, and union parishads, and currently plans to run independently. He also said no formal coordination meetings with other political parties have taken place regarding the elections.

Sources said the party has already announced candidates in some city corporations for mayoral positions, while nominations for other posts are being finalized gradually. Potential candidates are actively engaging in public relations and organizational activities across different regions.

The party claims it is trying to include young voters as well as locally acceptable figures, and is also incorporating experienced leaders from other political parties.

Political discussions are also ongoing regarding mayoral candidates in Dhaka North and South City Corporations, though no formal decisions have been made.

NCP Joint Convener Monira Sharmin said participation in local government elections will strengthen the party’s organizational base in every area and serve as an important test for future national politics.

Meanwhile, political analysts believe that while there is discussion of coordination among like-minded parties in national elections, local government elections are becoming a test of organizational strength for each party individually, potentially creating new political equations.
