Bangladesh currently has an ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan program worth $5.5 billion. The organization has expressed interest in further supporting the country’s development in the future.
As part of this discussion, a virtual meeting will be held on Tuesday evening (September 16) between the Chief Adviser of the Caretaker Government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed and Finance Secretary Md. Khairuzzaman Mazumder will also participate in the meeting.
Earlier, the Chief Adviser had sent a letter thanking the IMF. In response, the IMF Managing Director reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to continue supporting Bangladesh’s development.
On January 30, 2023, a loan proposal of $4.7 billion was approved, to be disbursed in six installments over 42 months. The fifth installment has already been released. In June of this year, an additional $0.8 billion was provided based on Bangladesh’s request, bringing the total loan program to $5.5 billion.
The IMF’s support plays a significant role in maintaining Bangladesh’s economic stability and advancing reform initiatives.
