Sirajganj: Continuous rainfall and upstream hill flows have caused water levels in the Jamuna River to rise once more in Sirajganj, triggering a corresponding surge in the district’s smaller rivers and tributaries.
According to the Sirajganj Water Development Board, over the past four days the river has climbed 43 cm at the Sirajganj Town Protection Embankment “Hard Point” and 43 cm at the Kazipur Meghaighat gauge. As a result, adjacent low-lying areas are beginning to flood, submerging agricultural lands.
Mustafa Kamal, Officer-in-Charge of the Baghabari River Port Meteorological Office, has forecast that water levels will continue to rise in the Jamuna through 25 June, driven by shifting cloud bands and increased rainfall in northern Bangladesh.
Sub-Assistant Engineer Zakir Hossain of the Water Development Board explained that the recent upsurge is directly linked to sustained heavy rainfall upstream.
Despite these increases, authorities stress that current levels remain well below danger thresholds—263 cm at Sirajganj and 281 cm at Kazipur—so there is no immediate flood risk.
